Joan Milton became involved in teaching upholstery at two Shropshire colleges. It was then that she discovered how difficult it was for the DIYer or small business person to obtain tools or materials, hence the launch of her mail order Upholstery Supplies Catalogue. The Catalogue had been written for the complete novice, explaining the use of the tools and materials as well as using samples.

Teaching her trade gives her a great deal of pleasure and so it became inevitable that she developed this further. She now reserves her workshop several days a month for 'Teaching Days'. The classes are very small with a maximum of four students. The word 'student' conjures up a picture of a young person but in this case it is far from the representative of those who attend. These 'students' range in ages from 18 to 75 and are all enthusiastic to learn.

A Teaching Day starts around 9.15 am stopping for a light lunch, which is provided and ends around 5 pm. On two day courses accommodation can be provided either in a local Inn in the Town of Ellesmere or B & B situated by Shropshire Canal. As a two day course is usually on a Thursday or Friday it is possible to bring along a partner or friend and extend your stay over the weekend to visit some of the more beautiful sites of Shropshire, Wales and Cheshire.

As a student you would bring along a project or arrange for Joan to provide a new frame of a stool or chair. Joan specialises in traditional upholstery but you can also be taught modern techniques. For a beginner a simpler piece of furniture is best to start with, like a stool or dining chair but she advises you to discuss your project when you book your lesson.

It is not necessary to have your own tools or materials but you are welcome to bring them along if you have any, although top fabric or foam cut to size needs to be ordered in advance. A complete day will cost from just ?70 plus VAT and from ?18 per night for bed and breakfast if required.

Upholstery is a worthwhile hobby and you will never be short of jobs around the home on which to use your newly acquired skill - but beware, you may become addicted to craft. Please telephone if you would like dates of our next lessons.

If you would like to be on our mailing list to receive notice of the next available dates please telephone or email the sales office.

What our upholstery students say about us?.

"Dear Joan, Jo and the girls in the office
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my time with you just before Xmas. I learnt so much and now I can finish my stool. Its coming on, slowly but surely. I've also given your details to a colleague of mine - who is very keen to do a similar course. I did warn her that you get very booked up though!

Once again, thanks so much for such a wonderful experience - your tuition and the helpfulness and friendliness of everyone was superlative. It was such a welcome respite from the stresses of my day job and you have inspired me to continue learning more over the next few months and beyond. A friend has even said she'll pay me to re-upholster some dining chairs so I'm looking forward to tackling those. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to see you all for another course again."

All the best
Kate.
