THE TUTOR: Joan Milton became involved in teaching upholstery at two Shropshire colleges in 1988. It was then that she discovered how difficult it was for the DIYer or small business person to obtain tools or materials, hence the launch of her mail order Upholstery Supplies Catalogue. The catalogue had been written for the complete novice, explaining the use of the tools and materials as well as using samples.
Teaching her trade gives her a great deal of pleasure and so it became inevitable that she developed this further. She now reserves her workshop several days a month for 'Teaching Days'.
CLASSES: The classes are very small with a maximum of four students. The word 'student' conjures up a picture of a young person but in this case it is far from the representative of those who attend. 'Students' range in ages from 18 to 75 and are all enthusiastic to learn.
YOUR PROJECT: As a student you would bring along a project or arrange for Joan to provide a new frame of a stool or chair. Joan specialises in traditional upholstery but you can also be taught modern techniques. For a beginner a simpler piece of furniture is best to start with, like a stool or dining chair but she advises you to discuss your project when you book your lesson.
TEACHING: Each Teaching Day starts around 9.15am, stopping for a light lunch - which is provided and ends around 5pm. Accommodation can be provided either at a local farm B&B with some self catering rooms at the edge of the town of Ellesmere overlooking the Mere (Lake) or in a local inn in the small village of Whittington only 10mins drive from Ellesmere, which overlooks a castle.
MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT: As a two-day course is sometimes on a Thursday or Friday it is possible to bring along a partner or friend and extend your stay over the weekend in order to visit some of the more beautiful sites of Shropshire, Wales and Cheshire.
The course & booking information What you will Need You will need to bring your own project to the class but it is not necessary to have your own tools or materials but you are welcome to bring them along if you have any. However, top fabric or foam cut to size needs to be ordered in advance.

What our upholstery students say about us?
Hi Joan and Alison.
Just wanted to say a big thank you to Joan for the excellent and very productive 2 days on the upholstery course. Just 7 more chairs to go! I now think a bedroom chair is going to be dealt with when dining chairs are finished.
Kind Regards
Sue Taylor
