You can make them as simple or as complicated as you like, using a variety of fabrics to make the cover, but what’s the best thing to fill them with?

The answer to this question can depend on personal preference but also on what the cushion will be used for. Are these decorative cushions that only see light use? Are they going on a bed? Or are they going to be somewhere where they need to be more durable, like a sofa?

The Best Filling for Sofa Seat Cushions
A sofa cushion is likely to be used quite regularly, particularly if it is the base. For this reason, you might want to consider a more hard wearing material like foam. Foam will also allow for more support from the cushion. You could even combine materials with something like polyester to give a slightly less firm feel than pure foam. The Best Filling for Sofa Back Cushions
The cushions for the back of a sofa are going to see less wear than a sofa seat so, although they can be made with a foam filling they can also be made softer with a feather or down filling or a polyester.

Feather or down filling is typically more expensive than polyester but, as long as it is kept fluffed, is a durable fabric that provides long lasting comfort and support.

Polyester Filling
Polyester is an inexpensive filling that is easy to maintain and provides a good amount of support. The downside of polyester is that it isn’t particularly durable. This means that over time it can become more dense and less comfortable in only a few years.
